Health Effects of Caffeine Consumption
Benefits of Moderate Caffeine Intake
Moderate caffeine consumption has several potential health benefits. It can enhance alertness, energy, and concentration 1. Research suggests that caffeine may boost weight loss or prevent weight gain by suppressing appetite and stimulating thermogenesis . A 75-mg serving of caffeine can increase attention and alertness, while a 160 to 600-mg dose may improve mental alertness, speed reasoning, and memory 4.
Caffeine has also been associated with improved physical performance during endurance exercise 6. Some studies indicate that coffee consumption may help enhance certain thinking skills and slow mental decline associated with aging 10.
Potential Risks of Excessive Caffeine Consumption
Moderate caffeine intake can be beneficial, but consuming too much can have adverse effects. High doses of caffeine can cause anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and increased heart rate. Consuming over 400 mg of caffeine a day can lead to jitters, disrupted sleep, fast or uneven heartbeat, high blood pressure, headaches, and nervousness.
Caffeine can interfere with sleep patterns, even when consumed up to 6 hours before bedtime 12. High caffeine intake may also worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression 7. For pregnant women, consuming excessive caffeine has been linked to potential risks such as loss of pregnancy and delayed fetal growth.
Recommended Daily Limits
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a maximum intake of 400 mg of caffeine per day for healthy adults, which is equivalent to about four or five cups of coffee 4 . This amount is generally not associated with negative effects in most people .
For pregnant women, the recommendation is to limit caffeine intake to less than 200 mg daily, which is about two cups of coffee 5. It’s important to note that there is no set limit for children, but the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages caffeine consumption by children and adolescents 13.
